Have you ever felt like you're just spinning your wheels and going nowhere? Sometimes it seems like there are simply way too many choices, and it's not clear which one's the best. And then there are the moments when it seems as if there are no choices whatsoever. Either of these scenarios can be paralyzing to our productivity. Behavioral scientist and author Steve Mariboli calls this lack of clarity "poison" to a living goal.
A couple of years ago, I created a video to help my clients step away from their desks and get clarity. Scent is a great tool for this. It's the most powerful of our senses. In fact, it's 10,000 times more powerful than our next most powerful sense -- our sense of taste. And 75 percent of the emotions we experience on a daily basis are impacted by scent. The power of scent can help us transcend confusion and overwhelm.
The next time you need to take a break and want to clear your head or find some inspiration for a new project, put your nose to work. Get up out of your office chair or off the sofa and grab your mobile device. Step outside and take the scented walk that I developed. (Of course, if you have allergies it goes without saying this isn't for you! Unless, that is, you use my Plan B that you'll read about in a minute.)
Here is the link.
The video can be easily started and stopped along your route (and you'll want to do this so you can take the walk at your own pace). Focus on the smells you encounter along your path. Let your nose lead the way. Focus only on the scents (but watch where you're walking so you don't trip!). Rejuvenate and reinvigorate.
If you can't break free from your office, there's always Plan B. Yes, you can go for a "walk" right at your desk (or even in your living room) and use the pictures in the presentation to experience the scents with your mind's nose.
